Peter Kempter, The Woodlands College Park High School Orchestra director, leads a rehearsal in the school auditorium on Oct. 13, 2015.

Students in orchestra and band at The Woodlands College Park High School, which has the only full orchestra in Conroe Independent School District, will get a chance to hone their craft and work up close with successful professional musicians.

College Park was one of eight area campuses selected for the Houston Symphony Orchestra’s debut high school residency program.

“It’s going to be really, really cool,” said Peter Kempter, director of College Park’s Cavalier Orchestra. “That’s sometime the kicker – they just need to see some professional do their job, and then it’s like, ‘OK, I can do that.’ “

Once a month, Houston Symphony violinist Jenna Barghouti will make the drive to The Woodlands to work with about 100 students in the Cavalier Orchestra and the band to prepare for upcoming competitions and performances. She’ll hold workshops and go over interpreting musical styles, articulation and even auditioning. Barghouti was hired by the symphony this summer as part of its debut Community-Embedded Musician Program, its new educational initiative. click here for complete story and additional photos
