Football | Johnson continuing to improve at QB for Highlanders

While the weather radar indicated only a light pregame rain shower would hit Woodforest Bank Stadium on Friday evening, The Woodlands quarterback Quinton Johnson and the rest of the Highlanders were ready to take the venue by storm.

They did just that, pulling away from Oak Ridge in the second half for a resounding 49-14 victory. Johnson, who started his third game for The Woodlands this season, was a key contributor as the No. 8 state-ranked Highlanders (4-1, 3-0) moved into sole possession of first place in District 12-6A. continue reading

Football: Game of the Week – The Woodlands vs College Park

As far as cross-town rivalries go, College Park and The Woodlands might be the most heated. It’s no secret that when Oak Ridge, The Woodlands, or College Park face each other that each team brings a little something extra.

No more than five miles separates one school from either of the other two and their shared “home” stadium is, essentially, in the middle of all three. The rivalry extends to all sports and pretty much anything else having to do with each school.

But in Texas, where football is king, the energy is simply different when the battle takes place on the football field. click here for complete story

Football: Three returning playoff teams geared up

Continuing the 40-year long tradition, the Conroe Noon Lions Club held its annual Pigskin Preview featuring all of the high school of the Conroe area Wednesday afternoon at the Lone Star Convention Center.

Three out of the four playoff teams from 16-6A coaches spoke about their upcoming seasons.

  • College Park: Gets Head Start Just like he has with two-a-days this season, The Woodlands College Park high school’s head coach Ricard Carson got the party started.
  • Rush Starts Fourth Year: Carson then introduced Oak Ridge high school head coach Derreck Rush, who is going into his fourth year coaching the War Eagles.
  • Highlanders Bring Numbers: This summer the Woodlands has had over 350 kids working out, Monday through Thursday at 7:30 a.m., since the beginning of summer.

Football: Former Highlander named OVC Defensive Player of the Week

PERRYCOOPER12_4150Murray State linebacker Perry Cooper, a graduate of The Woodlands High School, was named Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Eastern Kentucky, the league announced on Monday.

Cooper had 12 tackles (six solo) and a pass breakup, but his biggest play came on the final play of the game in Murray State’s overtime victory over rival Eastern Kentucky. click here for complete story
