Before any feast was served, more than 5,000 people woke up on Thursday morning to participate in the 26th annual GE Run Thru The Woods, starting and ending outside the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
Directed by the South Montgomery County Family YMCA, Run Thru The Woods has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition for runners and residents of all ages.
“It just connects the community,” South Montgomery County Family YMCA Community Liaison Director Roxanne Davis said. “This is all about a day of giving thanks, celebrating. The South Montgomery County YMCA serves the entire South County area, so it just makes sense to bring all of us together.”
The morning kicked off with a one mile children’s race, follow by the start of the five mile run. There was also a three mile run and a three mile walk for participants to choose from. click here for complete story

A holiday tradition in The Woodlands Town Center, the annual Thanksgiving Day Run Thru the Woods Sponsored by GE and Directed by the South Montgomery County YMCA, is a race/walk designed for all ages and levels of fitness. This year marks the event’s 24th year as one of Texas’ premier running and walking family events. The 2013 event which should attract more than 6000 participants is both a family event and a serious running event, enticing for the competitive racer, weekend warrior, recreational runner, kids and walkers.
The 24th annual GE Run Thru the Woods is scheduled for November 28, 2013 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands Town Center. Categories and start times include a competitive 1 mile Children’s Race “Presented by Anadarko, for ages 12 and under starting at 7:45am; acertified 5 mile Run “Presented by St. Luke’s Performance Medicine” at 8:15am; a 3 Mile Race “Presented by Repsol” for all ages at 8:25am; and the 3 Mile Walk “Presented by Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation” starting at 8:35am. The 5 mile event also features a Masters, Clydesdale and Athena division. To ensure fast and accurate finish results, the event will use “B” Timing Tag technology to track all the runners as they cross the finish line.
NEW this year: Dri-Fit shirts for the 3 mile and 5 mile runners and instant finish line results as your cross the finish line. Use your smart phone to scan the QR code on your race # at the end of your race for your finish time!
Awards include cash prizes to the overall top 3 finishers, Male and Female in the 5 mile run. Along with the cash, and unique trophy the overall top finisher, Male and Female will each win a special prize. Awards will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rdplace finishers, male and female, in each age group category including 5 mile, Clydesdale, Athena and Masters division and 3 mile race. In the 1 Mile Children’s race, 1st – 4th place awards will be distributed to the top 4 finishers in each age group. Finisher Medals will be handed out at the finish line to all participants. New this year is Dri-Fit shirts for the 3 mile and 5 mile runners. A complimentary pancake breakfast, provided by The Egg and I, will be available for all participants this year.
Proceeds benefit youth charities in Montgomery County including the South Montgomery County YMCA Partners Scholarship program. Other local charities that benefit from the run include Operation Graduation at all 3 high schools in the South Montgomery County area, Conroe ISD AFJROTC Program, and the Education Outreach Program at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. In 2012, the event attracted over 5800 participants and raised over $160,000 for the benefiting charities. The event also supports the Christian Food Bank, Can-n-Keys. All participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item with them on Thanksgiving Day Morning. Collection barrels will be located in convenient strategic places throughout the parking area on race day morning.
The overall success of the charity event is largely due to the generous support received from the community partners and participants. Early registration deadline is November 15th. All registrations received Nov. 16 – 27, incur a $5 late fee.
