Football | The Woodlands RB Gilford getting better by the week

The Woodlands sophomore running back Bryeton Gilford is just getting better by the week.

Already pretty consistent throughout on the season in terms of touchdown production, Gilford nearly doubled his season output Friday night at Woodforest Bank Stadium as the Highlanders rolled past Conroe, 42-0.

Gilford came into the night with five rushing touchdowns on the season. Against the Tigers, he rushed for four more touchdowns on a fall evening that featured colder conditions than normal and a brisk headwind when running towards the north end zone. Continue reading

Football: The Woodlands hands Atascocita first loss, remain undefeated in district

It was just another week for The Woodlands as they let their stout defense dictate the game in Saturday’s 38-14 win over Atascocita. With the victory The Woodlands remained undefeated in District 16-6A play and now have the inside track to a district championship.

Leading the way for The Woodlands Highlanders would be quarterback Eric Schmid, who completed 11 of his 22 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns. click here for complete story

When most kids begin studying football film, they are on their high school teams and looking for an edge against a kid on the other side of town.

When Antoine Winfield Jr. started studying film, he was watching guys like Donald Driver, Bernard Berrian and Charles Rogers. Also different from most kids, Winfield – a senior safety at The Woodlands – was watching his dad on the same tape. click here for complete story

Football: The Woodlands loses tough road game to Katy

IMG_3600The Woodlands traded punches with the #2 ranked team in Texas 6A Friday night only to come up short 14-7 in a heavy fought game.

“I told our players if you don’t feel broken hearted about losing this game than there is something wrong with you as a player,” said Mark Schmid, The Highlanders head coach.

“I was really proud of the effort, no doubt about it. This game does not make or break our season and if you handle this loss the right way it could define our season.”

Football: Speed Moving Winfield Up Recruiting Board

The power of speed is amazing.

“I thought I ran a pretty good time, but when the coaches gave me my cards, I was shocked,” he said. “I thought wow, I didn’t think I was moving that quick. They were pretty shocked also.”The Woodlands DB Antoine Winfield attended the Ohio State camp and ran some head-turning times in the 40-yard dash last week. When he looked down, he saw 4.27 and 4.35 on his performance card.

Earlier this summer, Winfield went to a camp at Ohio State, where he performed well, which is no surprise considering he is familiar with the confines. He father, Antoine Winfield, was a star player in Columbus, Ohio, back in the day. He had a 15-year NFL career with the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings. click here for complete story
